Ready to Learn How to Play the Electric Guitar?

Garry Fionnlagh asked:

The guitar is probably the coolest musical instrument ever invented. Electric Or acoustic? Take your pick, they both ROCK!

First things first: you have to buy a guitar (assuming you don’t have one). A cheap one will do just fine (keep it below $200). Then you will need a small amp (15-30 Watts will be enough to get you going). A few picks and a tuner may come in handy too…

Now for the learning part there are a few paths you can take: Private lessons, buddy lessons, online lessons, book lessons…

Private lessons: The best choice if you are 8-10 yrs old and your parents have a great deal of money to spend. Not so good though if your goal is to start strumming your favorite tunes (or solos) as soon as possible.

Buddy lessons: If a friend of yours is a decent guitar player maybe he can teach you the basics (strumming, chord progressions and some scales). After that you can take it from there using various aids (books, software and online resources). This is the way I learned anyway…

Books: There are lots of good reads on the market but alone won’t do the trick. You will always need some kind of guidance for your first steps.

Online lessons: The internet is full of guitar learning resources. Tabs, scales, training software, downloadable courses, video lessons and much more. Some of them come free, some don’t.

If you are a total beginner you can find yourself surfing for days and still wondering where to start. That being the case you should probably spend a few bucks (no more than $30-35) and get a subscription to a high quality guitar learning website.
